Distracted Driving Accidents
One of today’s worst road hazards is the driver on the cellphone. Texting and paying attention to distractions while driving is a constant threat to not only the driver, but others on the road. One split second of a driver’s distraction can cause months of pain and recovery time for those injured.
In Ohio, the risk can be especially high. Here, primary enforcement of our distracted driver law targets only teen drivers. Ohio drivers under 18 suspected of texting or otherwise communicating on a device while driving face a fine and license suspension. The punishment doubles if the teen is caught again. But adult drivers who are texting or reading a text message can’t be pulled over unless they’re violating some other provision. In contrast, most states have texting bans that they enforce equally across the board, for drivers of all ages.
Texting While Driving Endangers Lives
Distractions can involve drivers taking their eyes off the road, their hands off the wheel or their minds off the task of safe driving.
Texting involves all three acts, making it especially dangerous.
